Hi, abc1.
Support for VLC is provided through their forums, which you can find here. I don't mean to send you somewhere else, but you should go to their forums for this specific issue.
As some general troubleshooting tips:
1. I presume you have tried the usual things, i.e. delete its preferences file
org.videolan.vlc.plist
from your Home > Library > Preferences folder? If not, try that.
2. If it fails on one specific video, it could be just that video. If it fails on all videos, that could be an issue with the preferences or some other incompatibility.
3. If you made any other changes to your system before the problem arose, those changes may be the cause.
4. As a general checkup, I suggest you run the procedure outlined in my 'Resolving Disk, Permission, and Cache Corruption' FAQ. Perform the steps therein in the order specified.
Good luck!
😉 Dr. Smoke

Devices and Mac OS X version

VLC media player requires Mac OS X 10.7.5 or later. It runs on any Mac with a 64-bit Intel processor or an Apple Silicon chip. Previous devices are supported by older releases.
Note that the first generation of Intel-based Macs equipped with Core Solo or Core Duo processors is no longer supported. Please use version 2.0.10 linked below.

If you need help in finding the correct package matching your Mac's processor architecture, please see this official support document by Apple.

Web browser plugin for Mac OS X

Support for NPAPI plugins was removed from all modern web browsers, so VLC's plugin is no longer maintained. The last version is 3.0.4 and can be found here. It will not receive any further updates.
